If you weren't already terrified of Giuliani

You probably never heard him speak. Key quote: "Freedom is about authority."

Mitt's Innocent Little Mistake

Confusing an audiotape purporting to be Osama bin Laden's instructions to jihadists with a speech by Barack Obama. I mean, what's the difference, really?

Oh, but the best part was when his campaign then claimed - after he specifically attributed bin Laden's comments to the "wrongheadedness of the Democratic party and its candidates" - that all he did was mix up two people's names that are only one letter apart. For some reason I think it was a slightly larger error than that.

Christianity and Cryonics

Obviously, God would rather you pay $150,000 to have your corpse decapitated and filled with a toxic fluid before being dumped in a massive dewar of liquid nitrogen than accept death and bequeath your estate to charity.

Umberto Eco to speak at NYPL

If you're in New York November 15, you should go see Umberto Eco speak at the NYPL. I'm still kicking myself for missing his comments on writing at an author's convention in Denton a couple years ago. Don't end up like me!

What do you do when the little monkeys gang up on you?

Get your own, bigger monkeys. This is especially helpful now that the monkeys have started killing off government officials with anti-monkey platforms.

Rylz: i kind of feel sorry for him... thousands of americans are laughing at his death

After 700 years of secrecy, a leather-encased set of genuine reproductions can be yours - for only $8,750. They say the main reason they are publishing is to quash rumors started by trashy novels without subjecting rare centuries-old documents to undue stress and handling.

I think Gershwin would have...

love this. It hasn't aged badly at all, and all it needs are some dancing girls thrown in. Too bad the piano player looks rather bored. Perhaps he isn't bored, but thinking "I'm going to KILL my agent!" Rhapsody in Disco

H.R. 3675: To prohibit Federal grants to or contracts with Columbia University. No, i'm not making this up.

Ardour 2.1 released, native OSX support

Apparently the port of gtk at aqua is far enough along that the latest version of Ardour can be run without X11 installed. Which is a pretty big deal, because X11 support on OS X blows, and almost nobody has it installed. So if you have a Mac and have been wanting a super-stable high performance multitrack recording studio that also happens to be free and open, now's the time to check it out.
