The Benarita

Here follows my favorite take on the margarita: the BENARITA. The key is the high tequila:other stuff ratio.

Ingredients: Top notch tequila (usually Patron), triple sec, FRESH lime juice, bitters.

Drop 3 ice cubes in a cocktail shaker.
Pour tequila up to the top of the ice cubes. The more, the better.
Pour 1/2 seconds of triple sec.
Pour 3/4 seconds of lime juice.
1 drop bitters.
SHAKE HARD.
Serve up.

(makes one serving)

Incidentally, the BENARITA goes very well with the MST3K version of "INVASION USA."

It's finally time Sublunar Minds starts spending some serious print space on one of our favorite pastimes: creating cocktails. I've started a line of drinks humbly named after myself: The Ben Drinks. I'll be posting drink mixing formulas here from time to time to keep you lucky readers properly inebriated.

First, we'll review the Ben Drink basics:

Always use great booze. It's worth the extra money.
Use lots of booze. You should always be able to taste it...if you don't like the taste of good booze, what are you doing making cocktails?
The harder you shake it, the better it tastes (although not every drink is to be shaken).
Never measure things exactly. It's more fun when you fly by the seat of your pants.

Plan 9 from Outer Space: The Musical!

Sometime in the fall of 2003, I took a young lady to see this original musical during its debut (and, to my knowledge, only) run at the Box Theater in Fort Worth. The performance was held on the second story of the Ridglea Theater in an old broom closet with a thrust stage and a dozen seats shoved in it. An all death metal lineup had sold out the huge house downstairs, and the thin walls and ceilings of the complex permitted us to experience both shows simultaneously.

Unique to the cast, the narrator could match pitch, which was a welcome relief. The part of Bela Lugosi was played by a cardboard cutout of him as Dracula stolen from the window display of a Hollywood gift shop - when his character died, they pushed it over. One of the two male singing and dancing cops was actually female, and did a hero's work trying to sing her part in the written octave.

Flying saucer sightings were illustrated by a model spaceship, which was hooked to a laundry line about 7' above the front of the stage and launched across by an awkward, semi-visible stage hand. Except when the saucer got stuck in the sag stage center and the stagehand had to run out and push it the rest of the way. There were no blackouts - the cast just sat around for while when each scene ended, then picked up their props and shuffled off. Perhaps most impressively, they were able to accurately recreate Ed Wood's exact cockpit set.

Anyway, I saw the movie earlier tonight, and was wondering if anyone else had put on the musical and filmed any of it, so I looked it up online. Turns out the Box Theater filmed the first two nights of their production and put the whole thing on youtube! Go the Box Theater! I can only assume that I saw it much later in the run, after multiple talent and set modifications, because this video does not entirely line up with the above recollections, but it is still fantastic.

The male lead of this film played the overacting effeminate dick in "Sunday School Musical", another great film of 2008 I had the pleasure of seeing last night. It appears he is trying to toughen up his image by starring in a romantic comedy that consists entirely of Japanese dick jokes.

Also, I don't know if you caught this, but there is really a film called "Sunday School Musical". Just watch the trailer. Holy crap, that is amazing. Can't wait for the Rifftrax.

"Warm as the autumn light", from The Ballad of Baby Doe (Douglas Moore / John Latouche)

This is from the premiere recording with Beverly Sills as the title character, and Walter Cassel and Frances Bible as Horace and Augusta Tabor. Heretically, I don't think this is the best recording ever, but it's hard to argue with the emotion the singers put behind it (even if their tuning isn't always spot on). Also, this entire opera was recorded in one take. Which is insane.

I picked this song because A) it is gorgeous, and B) it is a good example of the unparalleled quality of poetry this opera offers (perhaps even better is Baby Doe's closing aria, "Always through the changing"). It definitely is not a perfect show, but in terms of character development in American opera...it's pretty hard to beat. And, again, this music is fantastic.

Pierre Bernac sings Ravel's Chanson romanesque, from Don Quichotte à Dulcinée

I think this was originally written for a movie adaptation of Don Quixote, but then the director decided he could do better than Ravel in the film score dept, so Ravel cut his losses and turned it into a song cycle. Pierre Bernac, although with Gerard Souzay, is one of the premiere interpreters of French song, but if you don't already know what it's "supposed" to sound like, this probably won't convince you. Still, a pretty rad tune with the perfect amount of old record vibe.
